Book Review Thursday: Double Strike: A Davis Way Crime Caper by Gretchen Archer

It’s Book Review Thursday. Come back each week to get a peek inside what authors I love and what storylines inspire me.

DOUBLESTRIKEfrontDavis Way has enough on her plate right now: a future mother-in-law who doesn’t think Davis is good enough for her son; her mother, who hates the future mother-in-law for giving her baby girl a hard time, and her father, who is trying to keep a low profile by hiding behind his newspaper. Her fun-loving grandmother has decided to divorce her latest husband over a dog…oh, and she can’t get a marriage license because she’s still technically married to her rattlesnake of an ex-ex-husband (ok, so she had married him twice, don’t hold it against her). And that’s just her personal life.

Her job at the Bellissimo Resort and Casino is about to get interesting again. The new casino manager, Levi Newman, has brought in his own people, and they are preparing for a Strike it Rich tournament in a remodeled area of the Bellissimo, but he wasn’t letting any of the regular casino staff into the new area. They go undercover: her partner, Fantasy, ends up as a waitress, and Davis is the assistant social media director for the tournament. A disastrous trip with Baylor, another Bellissimo security man, ends with them getting shot at on what they think is the Christmas tree farm of two Strike it Rich players. But the trees are hiding a dark secret, and it almost gets Davis and Baylor killed.

The death of an undercover federal agent brings the Feds into their investigation of the tournament, and they are given a few days to find out who’s behind the tournament before the Feds are taking over. It doesn’t help matters that Davis has to deal with Bianca Sanders, the wife of the owner, and the sudden appearance of the Sanders’ son, Thomas, further complicates things, especially when he gets expelled from his private school for dealing pot.

With all these things going on, it’s a wonder Davis doesn’t go crazy. It’s bad enough that she loses most of her hair when it catches fire (Bianca’s fault, totally), or that she has ticked off the lawyer who handled her divorce by stealing his car. And making a deal with the devil, in a manner of speaking, brings her more trouble than she expected. But when Bianca is kidnapped by the tournament mastermind, Davis turns to someone she never thought she’d have to deal with to save her life. Will Davis and the Bellissimo crew be able to figure out what is going on before they all end up wearing orange jumpsuits? And will Davis ever be able to marry the love of her life, Bradley Cole?

Double Strike is the third installment in the Davis Way adventures, and it is the best one by far. It was a good thing I was home alone when I read this, because I was alternating between laughing out loud and gasping in horror. Colorful characters with a casino for a backdrop, well-written with plenty of twists and turns, you will enjoy this book as much as I did. Two thumbs up! I can’t wait for the next one!!

Pick up Double Strike on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Google Books and Audible.

It’s Promote an Author Tuesday! Meet Gretchen Archer, the mind behind Double Strike. Stop back over on Thursday to read my full review of the book!

Double Strike

DOUBLESTRIKEfrontBellissimo Resort and Casino Super Spy Davis Way knows three things: Cooking isn’t a prerequisite for a happy marriage, don’t trust men who look like David Hasselhoff, and money doesn’t grow on Christmas trees. None of which help when a storm hits the Gulf a week before the most anticipated event in Bellissimo history, the Strike It Rich Sweepstakes. Securing the guests, staff, and property might take a stray bullet. Or two.

Bellissimo Resort and Casino Super Spy Davis Way has three problems: She’s desperate to change her marital status, she has a new boss who speaks in hashtags, and Bianca Sanders has confiscated her clothes. All of which bring on a headache hot enough to spark a fire. Solving her problems means stealing a car. From a dingbat lawyer.

Bellissimo Resort and Casino Super Spy Davis Way has three goals: Keep the Sanders family out of prison, regain her footing in her relationship, and find the genius who wrote the software for futureGaming. One of which, the manhunt one, is iffy. Because when Alabama hides someone, they hide them good.

DOUBLE STRIKE. A VIP invitation to an extraordinary high-stakes gaming event, as thieves, feds, dance instructors, shady bankers, kidnappers, and gold waiters go all in. #Don’tMissIt
